You found a great deal on a DJI drone, or your controller took a tumble, and now you need a remote. Then you hit the alphabet soup: RC-N1, RC-N1C, RC-N2, RC-N3, DJI RC, RC 2. They look alike, but they are not interchangeable. Buy the wrong one and it won't pair with your aircraft, no matter how many times you restart it.
This guide breaks down which DJI remote controller works with which drone, so you can get back in the air quickly without guessing.
Why DJI controllers aren't one-size-fits-all
The controller and the drone have to speak the same video transmission "language." DJI has moved through several generations of its OcuSync transmission system (O2, O3, O3+, and now O4), and each controller family is built for specific generations.
The quick rule of thumb:
- Older Mini, Air 2, Air 2S, Mini 3 and Mavic 3 drones use the RC-N1 family and the original DJI RC.
- Newer O4 drones like the Mini 4 Pro, Air 3 and Air 3S use the RC-N2, RC-N3 and DJI RC 2.
- FPV drones like the Avata and DJI FPV use their own controllers that work alongside goggles.
The two generations don't cross over. An RC-N2 won't fly a Mini 3 Pro, and a DJI RC won't fly a Mini 4 Pro.

DJI adds support through firmware updates, so always check the specific listing and DJI's latest compatibility info before you buy. Not sure? Message us before ordering and we'll confirm it for your aircraft.
Controllers for older DJI drones (O2 / O3 / O3+)
DJI RC-N1: the workhorse
The RC-N1 is the standard phone-holder controller that shipped with the Mini 2, Mavic Air 2, Air 2S, Mini 3 series and Mavic 3 series. It's the most flexible controller in DJI's older lineup, which makes it a great spare or replacement if you fly more than one older DJI drone.
Our pre-owned DJI RC-N1 (RC231, 5200 mAh) is tested, comes with a 30-day warranty, and ships with the phone cable you choose (Lightning or USB-C) in your order notes.
DJI RC-N1C: for the Mini 4K and Mini 2 SE
The RC-N1C looks almost identical to the RC-N1 but is a lighter version with a smaller battery. It's the controller that comes with the Mini 4K and Mini 2 SE, and that's what it's meant for. If you fly one of those two drones and just need a replacement, the pre-owned RC-N1C is the budget-friendly pick. If you also fly a Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S or Mavic 3, go with the full RC-N1 instead.
DJI RC (RM330): ditch the phone
The original DJI RC has a built-in 5.5-inch Full HD screen with DJI Fly pre-installed, so you can power on and fly without plugging in your phone. No more notifications popping up mid-shot and no more draining your phone battery. DJI lists it for the Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S and the Mavic 3 family. Some of those were added through firmware updates, so update the controller before you pair it for the first time.
Our pre-owned DJI RC (RM330) is tested and verified unbound from any DJI account, so it's ready to link to your drone.
Controllers for newer DJI drones (O4)
DJI RC-N2
The RC-N2 is the phone-holder controller built for DJI's O4 transmission. DJI officially lists it for the Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro. It will not work with O2/O3 drones like the Mini 2, Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S or Mavic 3. Check out our pre-owned RC-N2 (RC151).
DJI RC-N3
The RC-N3 is the newer phone-holder controller for O4 drones. DJI lists it for the Air 3S, Air 3, Mini 4 Pro, Flip and Neo, along with newer models. Like the RC-N2, it doesn't work with the Air 2 or Mini 3 Pro. See our pre-owned RC-N3.
DJI RC 2
The RC 2 is the screen controller for the O4 generation. Compared with the original DJI RC, DJI says it has a faster processor and an upgraded antenna system with two internal and two external antennas. It's the best fit if you fly a Mini 4 Pro, Air 3 or Air 3S and want a phone-free setup. Grab a pre-owned DJI RC 2 (RC331) for less than buying new.
What about FPV drones like the Avata?
DJI's FPV drones work differently. They're flown with goggles on, using either a motion controller or a stick-style FPV controller:
- DJI Motion Controller: works with the DJI Avata and DJI FPV, paired with DJI Goggles 2 or FPV Goggles V2.
- DJI FPV Remote Controller 2: stick control for the DJI FPV drone and original Avata.
- DJI RC Motion 3: the newer motion controller for the Avata 2, used with DJI's newer goggles.
Goggles compatibility matters here too, so check the goggles you own before you choose a controller.
Tips before you buy a pre-owned controller
- Match the generation first. Find your drone in the table above before you look at price.
- Make sure it's unbound. A controller still tied to someone else's DJI account can cause headaches. Buy from a seller who checks this.
- Update the firmware. Several pairings were added through updates. Update the drone and controller in DJI Fly before pairing.
- Get the right phone cable. Phone-holder controllers (RC-N series) need a Lightning or USB-C cable that matches your phone.
- Check the sticks. Smooth, centered sticks with no drift are a must. Every controller we sell is tested before it ships.
How to pair a replacement controller
Once your controller arrives, charge it, mount the sticks, and power on both the drone and the controller. In the DJI Fly app, open the Control settings and choose Pair to Aircraft, then follow the on-screen prompts. On most models you'll press and hold the drone's power button until it beeps to finish linking. Screen controllers like the DJI RC and RC 2 need to be activated with a Wi-Fi connection the first time you use them.
